Why is dewatering important?

In addition to draining retention ponds or valleys of water, dewatering can also be used to drain underground water, which helps to dry the soil to make it more suitable for construction. Dry soil reduces the risk of sediment being carried off by water and helps to stabilize the landscape.
With spring comes two things: the onset of construction season for most of our country and rain- lots and lots of rain. The unpredictability of storms and the amount of rainfall is all a guessing game.  Jobsites flood, work stalls and projects get delayed. Rain makes it hard to keep dry and on-schedule.

What’s the solution?
Dewatering is a technique used to control groundwater on a jobsite. In layman’s terms, it’s the non-toxic process of separating solid waste from sludge and temporarily lowering groundwater levels for drier and more stable working conditions.

Groundwater has a major impact on any construction site

Water can damage construction equipment or slow down operations. The presence of water can also obstruct certain site tasks, such as pouring concrete. In addition to draining retention ponds or valleys of water, dewatering can also be used to drain underground water, which helps to dry the soil to make it more suitable for construction. Dry soil reduces the risk of sediment being carried off by water and helps to stabilize the landscape favorable for construction.

Groundwater Control Through Deepwell Dewatering

Deep well dewatering is recognized as a cost effective and efficient way for medium to long term dewatering of larger projects where the excavation is greater than 4m or when a WellPoint system is deemed inefficient.

Our system has many advantages:
         Minimal noise
         Easy to install
         No limits on drawdown
Fewer Deep- wells required than well system

The main objective in any dewatering exercise is to lower the water table below the working platform and maintain the reduced level economically and efficiently for the duration of the dewatering period.
Deepwell dewatering principle
The soil profile and its permeability in and around the site will determine which type of dewatering system will be most effective. This in turn will allow SWAN DEWATERING to formulate the number and size of wells required to lower the water table for excavation. Positioning may also be considered to suit the client’s construction requirements.

Groundwater management involves strategic positioning of wells to provide a dry working platform and to limit the effects on the groundwater table (GWT) beyond the site. The reduced water table forms a cone of depression between the natural GWT and the submersible pump.
Dewatering cone of depression
The extent of local reduction in the water table is dependent on the pump depth, capacity and the permeability of the soil. The depressed water table at distance (say H) from the natural GWT depicts the dewatering of a typical high-rise site.

Deepwell Dewatering Methodology

Deepwell Dewatering Bore scheme

1.The area for installing deep sump well will be marked by surveyor and the area will be checked for existing underground utilities.

2. The sump well be installed into the ground using water jet. If the strata are hard to penetrate, then suitable bore holes will be made for installing the deep well sump.

3. After the hole is drilled, an Ø200mm PVC perforated pipe is installed into the drilled hole surrounded with 3/8 3/16 aggregate filter materials to prevent the fines entering the system.

4. The submersible pump will be installed into the perforated pipe. The pump is connected to the electrical power generator/ EB.

5. The outlet of these well pumps are connected to the vertical pipes, which is connected to the suction hose.

6. The suction hose transfers the water to the sand settling tank. The silts    settled   in   the   tanks   will   be removed and dumped in an approved location.

7. The pumps will be operated until the work is completed. On completion of all dewatering activities the bore holes will be filled with suitable approved material.

8. Water levels will be checked and recorded regularly to derive the drawdown.

Deep Well Dewatering - Construction Dewatering

Deepwell system consists of an array of borewells pumped by submersible pumps.

Pumping from each well lowers the groundwater level and creates a cone of depression or draw down around itself.

Several wells acting in combination can lower ground water level over a wide area beneath an excavation.

The technique does not operate on a suction principle, large draw downs can be achieved, limited only by the depth of the wells, and the hydro geological conditions.
These Systems are more powerful for a wider area with optimal numbers of wells and pumps.
